Do you need a full-time marketing director during maternity leave?

Usually, no. A leave lasting several months rarely requires five days a week of senior marketing leadership, and Mateerz can introduce a senior leader to lead agreed objectives in 2 to 3 days a week.

Your team, agencies and specialist suppliers can keep campaigns live, publish content, manage channels and follow up leads. The gap usually sits in decisions: setting priorities, resolving a blocked launch, challenging an agency brief or choosing where to focus when results change.

Why 2 to 3 days can work

A senior leader brings judgement at the points where it has most value. They set direction, review marketing results, guide the team and give the CEO a regular view of progress. The in-house team or a deputy remains responsible for day-to-day delivery.

Part-time engagements form a measured part of the interim market. INIMA, the International Network of Interim Manager Associations, reported that 26% of assignments were part-time in its Annual Survey 2025, which measured about 800 interim managers across 11 European countries in January 2024. The UK share was 20%. The Institute of Interim Management, or IIM, found that nearly a quarter of UK interim managers’ latest assignments in 2026 were fractional, meaning delivered for part of the working week.

A fractional CMO in Europe suits a defined leadership need: keeping customer acquisition activity on track, improving the plan, supporting the team and giving the CEO experienced input.

How long will your marketing director be away?

It depends on the country and on the leave the parent chooses to take.

  • UK: GOV.UK states that statutory maternity leave lasts 52 weeks, comprising 26 weeks of ordinary leave and 26 weeks of additional leave.
  • Germany: under section 3 of the Mutterschutzgesetz, the maternity protection law, Mutterschutz lasts 14 weeks, with 6 weeks before birth and 8 weeks after in the standard case.
  • Netherlands: Rijksoverheid states that pregnancy leave and birth leave together last at least 16 weeks.

Additional leave, where conditions apply

  • UK shared parental leave: up to 50 weeks
  • German Elternzeit: until the child's third birthday

The headline period may not be the whole planning horizon. In the UK, GOV.UK says eligible parents can share up to 50 weeks of shared parental leave and up to 37 weeks of pay. Since 6 April 2026, paternity leave and unpaid parental leave have been day-one rights under the Employment Rights Act 2025.

In Germany, BEEG section 15 allows Elternzeit, or parental leave, until the third birthday. Up to 24 months may be taken between the third and eighth birthdays. The post-birth Mutterschutz period rises to 12 weeks after a premature or multiple birth. In the Netherlands, Rijksoverheid also provides for one week of partner birth leave and up to five weeks of additional birth leave.

Agree the likely absence and return approach before the leave begins. In practice, the period away can extend well beyond the initial statutory protection period.

What must keep running during the leave, and what can wait?

The work that protects revenue, customers and team momentum must continue. Everything else needs an explicit place in the plan.

Work that runs every week covers marketing performance reviews, campaign choices, agency direction, sales and marketing alignment, budget control and team leadership. A senior leader sets the rhythm, makes decisions and meets the CEO for regular reviews.

Work that is a project includes a positioning refresh, a new website, customer relationship management system rollout, market entry plan or product launch. It can progress when its scope, owner and decision points are clear. The cover leader can sponsor the work, test assumptions and remove obstacles.

Work that can wait includes activity without a clear business need, a wide rebrand with no launch date or reporting changes that do not affect current decisions. Pausing these initiatives protects the team’s attention.

Your in-house team or deputy keeps execution moving. The senior leader handles the choices requiring experience: where to focus, what to stop, which trade-offs to make and when the CEO needs to decide.

What are your options to cover the role?

You have four practical routes. Choose according to the amount of daily management, urgency and work that must continue after the leave.

OptionRhythmHow it endsWhen to choose it
Fixed-term maternity cover contractUsually full-timeThe absent employee returns, subject to the contract termsYou need a dedicated employee for the whole operating role
Agency temporary workerSet by the assignmentThe agency assignment endsYou need short-term operational capacity or a defined specialist skill
Full-time interim managerFull-timeThe agreed engagement closes or the permanent leader returnsYou need daily leadership through a major period of change
Fractional marketing leadership, 2 to 3 days a week2 to 3 days a weekThe engagement ends after agreed objectives and handoverYou need senior direction while the team continues execution

Fixed-term maternity cover contract suits a business that needs full-time people management, hands-on delivery and daily availability. Hiring requires lead time because a candidate may owe notice to their current employer. CIPD, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, reported in 2026 that 53% of UK organisations recruiting had difficulty attracting candidates, with senior roles the hardest to fill.

Agency temporary worker suits defined operational capacity, administration or specialist delivery. It is less appropriate for leading senior stakeholders and making decisions across sales, product and commercial teams.

Full-time interim manager suits a major launch, restructuring or sizeable team where daily leadership is required. An interim CMO mission can give the role that level of attention for the required period.

Fractional marketing leadership suits a leadership gap with a focused remit. Mateerz frames the engagement through a mission letter, a written document setting objectives and deliverables. The leader organises their own working days and methods, leads the team on agreed priorities and reports to the CEO in regular review meetings.

When is full-time cover still the right choice?

Full-time cover is right in four cases where the business needs leadership every working day.

Does any of these situations apply to you? Ticking a box updates the result below.

  • If your marketing team is junior and has no credible deputy, then appoint full-time cover to provide daily management and coaching.
  • If a major product launch, market entry or rebrand falls during the leave, then use full-time cover to manage the volume of decisions and dependencies.
  • If revenue targets depend directly on marketing activity and need daily intervention, then give the role full-time attention.
  • If marketing is dealing with a customer, reputation or commercial crisis, then appoint a leader who can respond immediately each day.

If none apply, two to three days a week can be enough.

If any apply, plan a full-time presence.

How does a marketing leadership mission run during a leave?

It runs in three phases: preparation before the leave, focused leadership during it and a planned return and handover.

Before the leave

The incoming leader meets the marketing director, CEO and team leads. Together, they map active campaigns, commercial priorities, budget commitments, agency relationships and decisions due during the absence.

The mission letter sets objectives, deliverables, reporting rhythm and decision boundaries. It identifies work that continues, work requiring a decision and work that can pause. It also records how the returning director will be brought back into current priorities.

During the leave

The leader establishes a practical operating rhythm for the team, including planning sessions, marketing results reviews and CEO review meetings. They lead agreed priorities, prepare decisions and keep stakeholders aligned.

This gives the business clear direction while preserving ownership of delivery within the team.

Return and handover

As the return approaches, the leader prepares a concise handover covering current performance, decisions made, work in progress, risks, budget position and recommended next steps. The returning marketing director receives an organised view of the portfolio and its immediate priorities.

A phased handover can help where projects are at a sensitive stage. The aim is continuity for the business and a well-prepared return for the parent.

What does such a mission look like in practice?

Matis, a platform for investing in contemporary art, needed cover during maternity leave within its marketing team.

Mateerz introduced Ludovic, former head of growth at Ledger, who brought experience from the investment world. Working 3 days a week, he kept projects moving, helped Matis promote its contemporary art investment model and increased visibility in its specialist market.

What does your HR team need to know?

Each country has its own route and written requirements. Your HR team should establish the legal and contractual arrangement before the engagement starts. Learn more about Mateerz and the way its marketing leadership engagements are structured.

UK. A fixed-term cover contract can end when the absent employee returns if, under section 106 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, the employer gives the cover employee written notice at engagement that this is how the role will end. Where you use an agency worker, GOV.UK states that equal treatment rights, including equal pay, apply after 12 weeks in the same job. A new hire may also owe at least one week’s notice after one month with their current employer under section 86 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, or longer where their contract says so.

Germany. For Mutterschutz or Elternzeit, BEEG section 21 and TzBfG section 14 allow fixed-term cover where the end is fixed or determinable. Under TzBfG section 14(4), both must sign the same document in written form. Email is not enough, otherwise TzBfG section 16 makes the contract open-ended. A new hire may owe four weeks’ notice to the 15th or month-end under BGB section 622.

Integration into your organisation and work under your instructions point to employment under SGB IV section 7, or to leased labour requiring an AÜG licence. Before work starts, the parties can request a status decision from Deutsche Rentenversicherung. This option runs until 30 June 2027.

Netherlands. A new hire may owe one month’s notice by default, according to Rijksoverheid. A longer period can be agreed, up to six months. Rijksoverheid says the way work is done in practice decides status, and replacing an absent employee one for one points to employment. Where someone works under your supervision and direction, Waadi requires the supplying business to be registered in the Handelsregister for supplying workers. You must check this.
